End of Term Message

It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of term! It does feel like the weeks have flown by, perhaps because it has been slightly shorter than usual and yet so packed with activity.

This week has been no exception! Two Greenpower teams tested their electric cars at Mallory Park, and four Rugby Sevens squads travelled to Rosslyn Park to compete on the national stage. We have also selected our new Prefects and Heads of School.

I am delighted to introduce Mrs Jaremczenko-Dye (or Mrs JD to most of us), our Director of Drama:

Every Tuesday, at approximately 3.58pm, the Drama studio fills with students from Prep to Year 9. Excited chatter and energy fill the air, and each week I think to myself: this is what it is all about. Watching year groups mix and work together in Drama Club, where they create wonderful (and mostly hilarious!) pieces of drama, reminds me of the thirst children have to create, and why it is so important that we build safe spaces for them to do this.

Student leadership

One of the great pleasures of my role as Headmaster is meeting every two weeks with our Senior Prefect team. This group of around ten Year 13 pupils, including our two Heads of School and their deputy, acts as an important voice for the Sixth Form and the wider pupil body. They are a much-appreciated sounding-board for me and their insights are invaluable in the day‑to‑day running of the school.

It has been lovely to have all pupils back in lessons this week, and to see a full assembly hall on Tuesday morning. During assembly we thought about the process of becoming an expert, and the threat that AI poses to this. I hope that your child also enjoyed Ms MacLeod's assemblies during the course of the week, and has a better sense about how to use AI well, and some of the dangers of misuse.

Sporting Success

I am delighted to share that our Year 13 pupils have secured a bumper crop of offers from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In the most successful year in recent memory they have secured nine offers from Cambridge and one from Oxford! These span a range of subjects, including some of the most oversubscribed courses such as Economics, Engineering, Maths and Medicine.

Musical Marvels

It has been another wonderfully ‘normal’ week at LGS: 25 music rehearsals, 26 sports fixtures and roughly 70 clubs and activities. Somehow our pupils have also managed to fit in a full week of lessons!

Our broad range of co-curricular activities is one of the things that makes LGS such a special place. A keystone of this offering is Music, and I am pleased to welcome Mr Barker to talk a little more about this:

We had an excellent assembly on Monday delivered by Mr McCann, who talked about the importance, and the joy, of actively trying to do things we find hard. He made the case that whilst comfort is important, it is often when we step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves that we truly develop our skills, understanding, and ultimately our confidence.

Mr McCann’s talk was followed by announcements of the winners and highly placed entrants in no fewer than four different academic competitions: the BEBRAS computational thinking challenge, the British Physics Olympiad, our own Foundation Day essay competition, and the Rotary Design Challenge.
