Or the courage to risk their lives for others, not only in combat, but perhaps as one of the thousands who resisted the enemy or sheltered Jews in occupied countries. Or even the courage to go on, having lost one or more loved ones in the conflict.

It is a serious time for our Y11 and Y13 pupils as they prepare for important examinations, but I know that many of the latter especially will not be counting down the days until they leave, but rather trying to stop the clock! As I write, several staff and I have just attended an informal gathering of Old Leicestrians in London. They were full of happy memories and anecdotes of their time at LGS, and of the experiences they shared with their fellow pupils and with their teachers. It was also great to hear how their LGS education has contributed to their onward journey.

This forms part of our cycle of departmental reviews, when we observe lessons, look at documentation and planning (including the department’s own self-evaluation) and conduct discussions with pupils of a range of ages and abilities. It is generally a very affirming and rewarding process, as we consider what is working really well and how we can together plan for further improvement in provision and outcomes.

I am delighted that so many pupils were able to benefit from school trips during half-term, and I am sure that many others are looking forward to various opportunities over the next few months, ranging from subject-related day trips to Duke of Edinburgh Award, residential field courses and our June Activities Week. We take the safety and wellbeing of our pupils very seriously, and I am very grateful to all those staff who plan, write risk assessments, train in first aid and understand the medical and pastoral needs of the children in their care. It is a significant responsibility to take a large group of children away, and I was very pleased to hear such good reports of pupils’ behaviour and participation from tired but happy trip leaders last week! Indeed, our success and happiness as a school community depend hugely on the positive and respectful relationships which we build between pupils, and between pupils and staff. We very much appreciated the email from a parent to the relevant staff, which perceptively conveyed the balance which we attempt to achieve on trips:

From what I hear, you managed the delicate challenge of providing a safe and rule bound environment with a relaxed holiday atmosphere. In fact, the teachers were all described as "chilled" which I understand is a compliment of a high level indeed......We were never worried about him or his welfare and care.

Our new Wellbeing Room has buzzed with happy activity, and I have been delighted to see older pupils working alongside our wellbeing staff and keen to make a difference for those lower down the school. Some of this has been based on Walt Disney’s animation, ‘Inside Out’, and the theme ‘Know Yourself, Grow Yourself’: understanding who we are can support resilience, growth and development.

They have occurred in a highly developed and wealthy part of our planet and have not discriminated between rich or poor. 5998 structures have been confirmed as destroyed, with 27 confirmed fatalities in the Palisades and Eaton fires. Homes have been turned to rubble and many people’s personal belongings consumed. We have become sadly accustomed to reading about the thousands killed and millions displaced by war and natural disasters elsewhere in the world, but we all know in our own relatively comfortable lives how attached we become to our homes and our belongings – and all that they represent to us. They are, however, fragile.

Boys, though, were out training for rugby under the floodlights and the sports centre was a hive of activity, with a busy badminton club in full flow and the fitness suite also humming with popularity. Later on, some of us were treated to a beautiful Christmas concert (and a mince pie) at Stoughton Church, where about forty musicians (choir, brass and strings) were performing – many in between rehearsals with the cast and crew for our forthcoming main production, Beauty and the Beast.

Earlier this week, I enjoyed a couple of days in the glorious Peak District with a Y10 Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Many of you know that pupils are only allowed to carry one emergency phone per group in a sealed plastic envelope (and easily accessible to all group members). They actually really enjoyed the digital detox, as they had plenty to keep them occupied, both when out walking and at the beautiful campsite. In their quieter, resting moments, they either enjoyed chatting, admiring the sunset or making their own entertainment.

Fortunately, no-one was hurt, and we were able to repair the extensive damage, covered by our insurance. Such tribulations pale into insignificance when compared with the life-changing crises caused by war. We have been very pleased this week to welcome eleven Ukrainian pupils and four staff to the school. The pupils all come from families involved in the conflict, and we hope and pray that their stay with us has provided some peaceful respite, whilst also reminding us of how fortunate we are to benefit from peace and freedom of movement. I am very grateful to our families (with Y10 children) who have generously opened their homes to our guests:

We are self-reflective as a school, committed to a continuous cycle of review and improvement, so that we are best preparing your children for an exciting life in an ever-changing world! That is why we constantly monitor and refine our plans, amending or identifying new priorities as we respond to feedback or events, within school, education and the wider world. Last term, we refreshed our SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis and met as school leaders with Trustees for a strategy day. This was informed by discussions in our three schools, inspection findings and surveys (parents, pupils, staff) and the numerous opportunities for pupil voice and advocacy.

A WHO survey looked at the lives of children aged 11, 13 and 15 living in Europe, central Asia and Canada, including more than 4,000 in England. By age 15, just 11 per cent of girls and 16 per cent of boys in England did the recommended 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity, which can include things such as brisk walking, cycling or rollerblading. The figures put England and Wales near the bottom of the global table. Furthermore, when it comes to eating breakfast before school, which experts say is a healthy eating habit for children, only 37 per cent of 13-year-old girls and 59 per cent of boys in England ate breakfast on weekdays.

I was intrigued to read this headline from the Metro earlier this week: ‘Your surname could be ruining your career, study finds’.

The article (https://metro.co.uk/2024/04/22/name-determine-well-school-study-finds-20693104) cites recent research from the University of Michigan which found that students whose surnames came later in the alphabet received lower grades than those at the top of the roll call. It also found that those students tended to receive harsher comments on their work and benefit from lower grading quality, measured by post-grade complaints. The findings were based on more than 30 million scores marked through the popular grading software, Canvas, which gives students’ papers to teachers for marking in alphabetical order by default. The reasons for the findings were unclear but thought to relate to increasing levels of fatigue and irritability when teachers spent long periods marking. The chief researcher said: “A college student emailed, asking us to share the paper with him. He mentioned that his last name started with W. He’s going to tell his parents that his lower grades are not because of him but because of his last name!”

We all thrive on inspiration. Our pupils want to be inspired by their teachers, although all of us realise that won’t happen 100% of the time! And teachers in turn need to seek their own inspiration in the subjects they love in order to inspire their ‘disciples’ (the Latin ‘discipulus’ meaning ‘learner’). The classroom is the forum for a dynamic relationship, where the mutual inspiration that comes from successful debate and discussion enriches the experience. We are delighted as teachers when our pupils ask us questions which really make us think hard, and we want them to be curious about their learning, pushing the bounds of their knowledge and applying that knowledge to novel situations. It’s also a great privilege to see our pupils in the Sixth Form sometimes surpassing us in aspects of their discovery. And, with Thomas Edison, we know that “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”!

Because I have visited many different schools as a senior leader, I am used to ‘taking the temperature’ fairly quickly and judging whether it is a calm, purposeful and happy environment. The first question we ask ourselves as inspectors – and then, of course, the pupils – is: “Are the children safe?” Indeed, the safety and wellbeing of pupils lie at the very heart of a school’s culture and should be prioritised above all else.

There was much excitement outside the form room I visited yesterday, as prefects played a fun game of ‘Splat’ with another Year 7 form – building trust between younger and older members of our school.
I am far from being an expert on the complex history of the area, but I sought to illustrate – through maps – some of the background, and to update pupils on what has occurred over the last few weeks. Whilst many of the scenes which have emerged are both disturbing and upsetting, it is vital that our young people have some understanding of the situation and are able to arrive at well-informed opinions, considering too how that might positively impact their own behaviour. I am sure it is the subject of discussions at home, and staff are especially alive to the concerns which pupils might feel currently. Mr Millward will be talking to pupils at our Remembrance assembly on Tuesday about how they can contribute to our ‘Peace tree’, and we will also be raising funds for the Save the Children charity who are providing humanitarian aid for children and families affected.
