Outstanding outreach

We are racing towards half-term and have had another exciting week in school. It is wonderful to see our teams heading out for not one but two Athletics meetings this week, we had a Guitar Concert on Monday evening and our Model United Nations team have returned victorious from their weekend competition, with all six members commended in one way or another. The highlight of the week was probably our Maverick Thinkers Final on Wednesday in which Year 9 pupils presented the findings of their independent research. I am told they did a fantastic job, despite presenting to an esteemed (and frankly intimidating) panel consisting of Dr Fulton, Dr Griffin and Professor Vanessa Munro from the University of Warwick. Pressure indeed!
Dr Fulton does not confine herself just to Maverick Thinkers, however, and I am delighted to welcome her to tell you more about our outreach programme:
At LGS, we believe education should shape who pupils are, not only what they know. When young people are given meaningful opportunities to engage with their community, they deepen their understanding of the world and begin to recognise their capacity to improve it. Outreach and partnership are therefore a vital part of how we nurture thoughtful, confident and socially responsible young adults.
A cornerstone of this commitment is our Sixth Form Aspire Community programme. This term, our Year 12 students took a break from their usual academic timetable to take part in a four‑week programme of community placements. Volunteering in local primary schools and residential care homes, they embraced the experience with energy, maturity and compassion, representing both themselves and the school with enormous credit.
In care homes, our students spent time listening, conversing and connecting – sharing stories, singing familiar songs, and bringing warmth and companionship to residents’ daily lives. In primary schools, they took on leadership roles: running sports sessions and guiding younger children through creative projects such as rock painting and origami. These experiences enable our students to build authentic relationships with people of different ages and backgrounds, developing confidence, empathy and a sense of social responsibility.
This outward‑looking ethos is not confined to the Sixth Form, community engagement is woven through every stage of school life at LGS. Our youngest pupils delight senior citizens with Christmas carol concerts and summer tea parties; our Sinfonietta group tours local primary schools to inspire the next generation of young musicians; and our partnerships with nearby state secondary schools enable shared use of facilities, collaborative events and professional exchange between staff.
It is in this spirit of curiosity, collaboration and generosity that we are delighted to invite you to the highlight of our outreach calendar: the biennial Bright Sparks STEM Fair, taking place on Saturday 13th June 2026. Completely free and open to everyone (whether connected to LGS or not), this vibrant event promises a day of exploration and inspiration. Previous fairs have welcomed up to 3,000 visitors, and this year’s programme is our most ambitious yet.
Visitors can look forward to an exceptional range of hands‑on experiences, including:
- AI in Action – meet intelligent robots, from robot dogs and humanoids to self‑driving cars.
- Surgeons of the Future – try laparoscopic surgery kits, practise surgical knot‑tying and explore intubation techniques.
- Driving and Flight Simulators – experience remote bush‑airstrip landings with MAF UK or test your skills on racing simulators with Experience Motorsport.
- Space Exploration – step inside a giant inflatable planetarium, examine real space hardware with Third Planet Orbital, or discover cutting‑edge research from Space Park Leicester.
- Cutting‑Edge Science – learn about genomics and precision medicine, engage with psychological testing equipment, or even record an ECG in the Careers in Health workshop.
We look forward to welcoming you to a day that celebrates learning, imagination and community, and that captures, at its very best, the outward‑looking spirit of Leicester Grammar School.
Thank you Dr Fulton. I do hope you can join us at Bright Sparks – it’s always a fantastic day and one of my highlights of the year.
With best wishes,
Magnus Anderson
