William

What A levels are you studying?
I am studying Mathematics, Economics, and Biology. I find this a powerful combination because it allows me to apply my learning to real-world situations. These subjects have helped me understand global affairs on a deeper level, and I enjoy reading beyond the curriculum to broaden and strengthen my knowledge.
What do you like doing outside of your studies?
Through the school's wide range of opportunities and excellent teaching standards, I have managed to achieve grade 8 standard in both cello and clarinet, alongside piano and electric guitar. I am naturally competitive, so I enjoy pursuing sport to a high standard both inside and outside of school. I currently represent the school’s 1st Team for tennis and have recently completed the Loughborough Half Marathon in support of Rainbows Children’s Hospice, raising over £1,500.
What do you most appreciate about Leicester Grammar School?
LGS has offered me countless opportunities across sport, music, and academia. However, what stands out most to me is the strong sense of community. The supportive environment allows for pupils to build meaningful relationships and work effectively as a team, creating a foundation that encourages academic and personal growth. I also value how the school genuinely listens to its pupils. Regular surveys give everyone a voice, and as the prefect team, we are committed to acting on this feedback in the coming year. The facilities here at LGS encourage students to become well-rounded individuals, with countless sports pitches, high-end music equipment, regular school productions and concerts pupils can take part in a wide variety of activities aside from their studies.
How would you like to make our community even better for our pupils next year?
I applied for this role because I want to make a difference, and to help improve our school to an even higher standard than it already is. I have a few things in mind, such as incorporating rock and modern music genres into the current selection of music options in which pupils can participate, on top of the multiple traditional style groups. Alongside this, I hope to strengthen the communication link between students and the prefect team by making more regular opportunities for students to voice their opinion and to tell us how we can make their experience here better in any way. I'm also an ambassador for student mental health, as this improves academic ability and is a useful life skill. I'm keen to support students’ work-life balance and ensure that pupils have a place in school where they can relax and take a break from the pressures of their busy lives.
What you are planning to do when you leave LGS?
I plan on being admitted into a university then taking a gap year to travel the world. I really value travelling and seeing different cultures; I think it's important to expose yourself to how other people live around the globe, and to put your own life into perspective. I would like to go to university to study something economics based, to help me build a good fundamental understanding of the world and how money works before deciding what to do with my career.

What A levels are you studying?
I am studying Latin and Classical Greek alongside Music. The languages can be very technical and philological, while Music provides a different kind of creativity where you can compose and perform. They make for a diverse and enjoyable pairing, yet what ties them together is that they all encourage you to consider the context, background and perspectives of others, whether that be of authors or composers.
What do you like doing outside of your studies?
I am an avid singer, organist and violinist and am involved every week with a variety of musical groups both inside and outside of LGS. I sing in three church choirs, which have given me the rare chance to sing in cathedrals around the country. In school, as I have got older, I have been able to lead ensembles, perform solos and play in the orchestra of the annual school musical: always a highlight. The school has also developed my passion for a wide range of sports, especially hockey, which I now play at county level. Other than that, I love horses and enjoy showjumping and hacking in the countryside.
What do you most appreciate about Leicester Grammar School?
I hold a firm conviction that role models are crucial to inspiring young minds and having teachers who are so passionate about their subjects as well as for all learning creates such a positive environment here at LGS, as well as a deep appreciation for education. LGS provides the opportunity to fully engage with everything you do, whether it be in academic studies, sport, music and drama, and the importance of this cannot be stressed enough. I have made true friends for life who are like-minded in approach whilst being diverse in background. I am so grateful to have been able to study here and appreciate these qualities of the school the most.
How would you like to make our community even better for our pupils next year?
LGS has a flourishing community, which I hope to be able to develop with the help of the rest of the Prefect team, in tandem with the Senior Leadership Team. Taking inspiration from Plato’s Golden Middle, I’d love to be able to start initiatives such as reward systems promoting a healthy study-life balance, especially for younger pupils, since starting out as you mean to go on in this way is essential for happiness. LGS offers a variety of co-curriculars and there is so much for everyone, so I’d love to urge people to get stuck-in with all sorts of hobbies and activities, for example in sport, drama and music. Another area I’d like to explore, in order to enhance the school community further, is maintaining a high level of pupil-teacher communication and feedback, which always proves effective when it comes to instigating change in matters brought up by students. Overall, I am pleased to have the opportunity to give back to the school as I have gained so much on a personal level.
What you are planning to do when you leave LGS?
My heart is set on studying Classics, with the current hope of continuing my education and becoming an academic and lecturer at university. I really enjoy the process of learning and research, which is why I feel like this career is a good fit for me. On the other hand, I am interested in diplomacy and am curious to see what a future in that direction could entail. I am certain, however, that I should always like to keep sport and music in my life, especially since becoming an organist and choir director as a secondary activity is a particular personal goal of mine. I know this will contribute to my sense of perspective and happiness, as well as to the preservation of a tradition, having had great role models thus far.
