Over and out

Apart from WhatsApp and a bit of LinkedIn, I have never been a great social media fan. I am old enough to have been brought up without technology, to remember my school’s computer room of six PCs, to have used extremely slow dial-up internet down the landline and to have owned a very unsmart brick-phone.

I have somehow survived without Facebook, Snapchat and Insta, although I've had to deal at times with their misuse by pupils! I'm certainly not a technophobe nor do I think I'm a dinosaur, and I've seen amazing uses of technology, some of which save me lots of time whilst others (e.g. emails) occupy loads of time!

I had a brief dalliance with Twitter when Head of my last school and I was rubbish at it. It was then that I decided instead to write a weekly blog, which I have done on a Thursday evening ever since. Sometimes I know several days in advance what I'm going to write, sometimes it relates to something in school or the news and my muse fills me with inspiration. At other times, I will sit down and the flow comes less readily, as you may be able to tell!

My main reason for writing it is to share with parents the values we embrace as a school community, as education for me has always been values-based, as we aim with you to nurture responsible and caring young people who will go on to lead generous and fulfilling lives.

There is certainly no expectation that you read my Friday blog every week - it is entirely up to you - but I am always grateful to those who say that they have discussed it at the dinner table and for the conversations it sometimes provokes on the touchline on a Saturday morning.

I have no special preserve on wisdom, but I enjoy writing and hope that some of my views and experiences have been instrumental in shaping our partnership as we together - parents and school - do our best to provide our children with the best possible start in life. I hope we've been on the same frequency.

Next week, I will send an end-of-term letter, so it's 'over and out' for now!

Best wishes,

John Watson
