Academic scholarships

We are pleased to offer academic scholarships for our most academically committed pupils at Leicester Grammar School. Scholars join a community of motivated and engaged pupils who make the most of a whole range of academic opportunities at the school.

Academic Scholarships – Years 7 to 10
Academic Scholarships celebrate curiosity, ambition, and a genuine love of learning. They are awarded to pupils who show exceptional academic promise and a willingness to engage fully in the intellectual life of the school.
Scholarships are primarily awarded to pupils joining Year 7, following performance in the entrance assessment and a short interview. Outstanding candidates applying for Years 8–10 may also be considered. Each year, we are proud to award a small number of scholarships to both internal and external applicants. Please note that there is no application form to complete.
Scholarship outcomes are shared alongside offers of places at the end of January.
Our scholars programme
As an Academic Scholar, your child will become part of a vibrant community of high-achieving, intellectually curious pupils. Scholars benefit from a range of opportunities designed to challenge, inspire, and extend their thinking beyond the classroom.
These include:
- A one-off £500 award towards first-term fees
- Access to inspiring super-curricular programmes such as Maverick Thinkers and Fresh Minds
- Opportunities to publish work in the LGS Science, Arts, and Humanities journals
- Invitations to exclusive events, including an annual Scholars’ Tea with the Headmaster and inspirational guest speakers from our Old Leicestrians community
- Recognition through a Scholars’ badge and inclusion in our Celebration of Achievement programme
Sixth Form Academic Scholarships
Our Sixth Form Academic Scholarships recognise outstanding academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to excellence. Open to both current pupils and new applicants, these scholarships celebrate those ready to thrive in a challenging and inspiring academic environment.
Each year, we award around 12 scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional potential and ambition as they move into Sixth Form study.
The application journey
Current LGS Year 11 pupils are invited to apply in the Lent term, with scholarship opportunities announced in November. The process includes a written application and an interview with senior staff.
External applicants are assessed as part of their Sixth Form application process, including participation in a Taster Day and interview.
Selection is based on a combination of strong academic performance, a clear passion for subjects, and the ability to think independently and engage with ideas beyond the curriculum. Successful candidates typically demonstrate excellent GCSE potential, alongside a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
A community of ambition and achievement
Sixth Form Scholars join a vibrant community of high-achieving students, supported and challenged to aim for the very highest outcomes, including entry to leading universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Warwick, and Durham.

Headmaster’s Award
We are also proud to recognise exceptional GCSE achievement through the Headmaster’s Award.
Any pupil who achieves ten GCSEs at grade 9 will receive this award, regardless of whether they have applied for a scholarship. The award carries the same benefits as an Academic Scholarship, celebrating truly outstanding academic success and potential.
Our Sixth Form Scholarships are more than an award - they are a gateway to opportunity, enrichment, and academic distinction.
