Sport scholarships
For entry in Year 7-10
Sport scholarships are available for pupils who demonstrate significant strength, county level (or equivalent) or above, in at least one of the sports offered at Leicester Grammar School.
- Cricket (Boys & Girls) – CAG/County Performance/District
- Hockey (Boys & Girls) – Standout player in School/Club/County
- Rugby (Boys) – Standout player in School/Club/County
- Netball (Girls) - Standout player in School/Club/County
- Tennis (Boys & Girls) – Standout player in School/Club/County
For entry in Year 12 (Sixth Form)
Sports scholarships are awarded for the Sixth Form to outstanding, all-round sportsmen and women who have achieved a high level of competence in two or more sports, of which at least one is a major Leicester Grammar School team-sport. Candidates will be assessed and interviewed at the school, and will be expected to demonstrate exceptional qualities of leadership and team-play, as well as a commitment to school sport.
Sports Scholarship (Years 7-10)
We are delighted to offer Sports Scholarships for pupils entering Years 7-10 at LGS. These scholarships recognise talented young athletes who demonstrate exceptional sporting ability, commitment and potential.
Who should apply?
Sports Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate:
- Outstanding ability in one or more sports
- A strong commitment to training and competition
- The potential to excel at school, county, regional or national level
While most awards are made to pupils entering Year 7, outstanding applicants joining Years 8-10 may also be considered.
How to apply
Applicants should download the Sport Scholarship Form and email it to scholarships@leicestergrammar.org.uk once completed and by Monday 7 December 2026.
- Applicants should provide details of their sporting achievements, representative honours and training commitments
- Supporting evidence from coaches or clubs may be included where appropriate
Assessment process
- Applications are reviewed by the PE Department
- Selected candidates are invited to a practical assessment in January 2027 (date to be confirmed)
- Assessments may include sport-specific activities, athletic tests and an interview
- Scholarships are awarded based on performance, potential and commitment to sport
Assessments take place following the entrance exams in January. Late applicants (after January) will normally be considered the following year.
Expectations of Sports Scholars
Sports Scholars are expected to:
- Represent the school with distinction in their chosen sports
- Demonstrate commitment to training, fixtures and competitions
- Act as positive role models within the sporting community
