Music scholarships

Music Scholarship (Years 7-10)
We are delighted to offer Music Scholarships for pupils entering Years 7-10. These scholarships recognise talented young musicians who demonstrate exceptional ability, commitment and potential.
Who should apply?
Music Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate:
- A high level of musical ability for their age
- Commitment to instrumental or vocal performance
- Enthusiasm for participating fully in musical life
While most awards are made to pupils entering Year 7, outstanding applicants joining Years 8-10 may also be considered.
How to apply
Applicants should download the Music Scholarship Form and email it to scholarships@leicestergrammar.org.uk once completed.
- Application deadline: Monday 7 December 2026
- Applicants should provide details of their musical experience, achievements and current level of study
- Supporting evidence, such as examination certificates or recordings, may be requested
Assessment process
- Applications are reviewed by the Music Department
- Selected candidates are invited to a practical music assessment in January 2027 (date to be confirmed)
- Assessments will typically include a prepared performance and a short interview
- Scholarships are awarded on the basis of musical ability, potential and commitment
Assessments take place following the entrance exams in January. Late applicants (after January) will normally be considered the following year.
Expectations of Music Scholars
Music Scholars are expected to:
- Make a significant contribution to the musical life of the school
- Participate regularly in ensembles, concerts and performances
- Demonstrate commitment to developing their musical skills
Benefits and recognition
Music Scholars receive:
- A £500 reduction on first-term fees
- Opportunities to take prominent roles within school ensembles
- Leadership opportunities through Friday lunchtime performance platforms for soloists and chamber ensembles
- Enhanced opportunities to perform and develop as musicians
- Invitations to special occasions, including an annual tea with the Headmaster for scholars and parents
- A Music Scholar's pin badge
- Recognition in the school's Celebration of Achievement programme
